Marko Simic tampil layaknya sebagai penyerang ulung dalam perhelatan Piala Presiden. Dalam tujuh pertandingan, Simic mencetak 11 gol. Dua gol terakhirnya dicetak di partai final yang berlangsung di Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno (SUGBK), Sabtu (17/2).
Selain berlangsung di SUGBK kehadiran Presiden Republik Indonesia Joko Widodo juga menjadi atmosfer yang membedakan suasana final dengan pertandingan-pertandingan yang dijalani Simic bersama Persija sebelumnya.
Penyerang yang pernah memperkuat timnas Kroasia di level junior itu awalnya merasa takut dengan kehadiran Jokowi.
"Luar biasa terhormat bertemu presiden. Awalnya takut tapi saya hargai kedatangan beliau. Ini seperti bermain di Piala Dunia, Liga Champions. Luar biasa, terima kasih Indonesia sudah menyelenggarakan turnamen ini," kata Simic.
Gelar juara Persija yang bersanding dengan penghargaan pemain terbaik dan pencetak gol terbanyak, membuat Simic percaya diri menghadapi kompetisi perdana di Indonesia.
"Saya bangga, ini momen terbaik dalam karier saya. Saya senang. Trofi ini untuk Persija. Saya harap kami bisa lebih baik di masa mendatang," ucap Simic.

Simic mengawali koleksi golnya di Piala Presiden ketika menghadapi PSPS Pekanbaru di fase grup. Setelah itu, pemain yang didatangkan dari Melaka United itu rutin mencetak gol.
Pemain berusia 30 tahun itu hanya absen mencetak gol di pertandingan menghadapi Bali United pada babak penyisihan grup.
Ketajamannya berlanjut di fase gugur. Bahkan di laga perdana semifinal menghadapi PSMS Medan, Simic mencetak tiga gol.
